Our gîte in France

As we were driving along the track just outside of a little village called La Houssaye I spotted our enchanted gîte through the trees, we were immediately wowed by its natural charm. As we got nearer we could see more of it’s character and couldn’t wait to get inside.

Upon opening the doors to the lounge I was blown away by its rustic and authentic look, I immediately felt relaxed. Walking through the gîte, every area seemed to be well thought out and the space has been utilised brilliantly.

To our suprise we received a lovely welcome pack, one bottle of red wine, one bottle of white wine, a jar of local jam, some chocolate biscuits, chocolate brownies and a cake, this was such a lovely touch.

The owner was friendly, informative and spoke a bit of English, which helped us a little as we are not fluent in French!! This property is amazing the lounge has 2 leather arm chairs situated in front of an inglenook fireplace and a little table has been placed between the chairs, ideal for snacks and of course some gorgeous cheese and French wine, which I’m looking forward to sampling. There is a solid wood table in the lounge ready for you enjoy an evenings banquet, or at least this is always how I feel when I’m eating in France, if you haven’t guessed I love French food. There’s 2 cupboards in the lounge, one with games, newspaper for the fire and candles, the other holds glasses, crockery and cutlery. Also a small television with a great selection of DVDs, most are in French. It has another sofa, which will sit at least 3 people, so if you happen to ask friends over for a drink there is plenty of seating.

The kitchen is situated at the back of the gîte just off of the lounge, it’s bright and airy with a window looking out onto some woodlands with goats feasting, it’s well equipped with a fridge, freezer, washing machine, microwave, small oven, a cooker, cutlery, crockery and the usual’s that you would expect to find in a holiday property.

thumb_DSC_0135_1024If you choose to you can sit around the small table in the kitchen and have a lovely meal, we mainly used this table as a preparation area, as there is limited work surfaces. It was great to have a small selection of herbs, coffee, oil and other jarred food left for us by people who have stayed previously. Please note there is a caffettiere so you can bring or buy fresh coffee, I do love a nice cup of fresh coffee! The fuel meter for the heating is in the kitchen and you are able to monitor how much you are using, this is recorded and you pay your fee at the end of your stay. (A quick note that the tea towels are hidden behind the kitchen door, we spent a lot of time searching for them).
Just situated off of the kitchen is a downstairs toilet with an ironing board and clothes airer to dry your washing. Heading through a doorway you come to the bottom of the stairs, at the top of the stairs there are 3 doors, one leads to a bathroom, one to a toilet and the other to the bedroom.

The bedroom feels really spacious with its high ceilings and exposed beams, the character in this room is so enchanting, 2 single beds have been joined together to make a lovely queen size we had an amazing nights sleep. There is no shortage of wardrobe space with 3 to choose from, not sure Mr P has ever had this much space for his clothes. The bedroom has 2 chairs with a great selection of English and French books, to read and relax. A chest of draws has been provided, with ample space for your undies, socks etc. This room could be used as a family room as it has a single bed and a cot provided.

The gîte has 2 terrace areas each situated in different locations, perfect for enjoying the morning, midday and evening sun. Unfortunately due to the timing of our visit we didn’t get the opportunity to use them, I can imagine that in the summer months these terraces would a fabulous asset to the property to entertain and dine outside (BBQ included).

We have really enjoyed our stay here, we both slept incredibly well, it’s quiet, off the beaten track leaving us feeling refreshed and ready to explore the surrounding areas. If you are looking for a quiet retreat with rustic charm this is an amazing place to stay…
