I love nuts therefore I include them in my daily diet because they are incredibly nutritious and beneficial to my health. Nuts are delicious bite size chunks of healthy goodness providing me with a good source of energy which stops my body getting low sugar dips once consumed.
Why eat nuts?
These snacks will leave you feeling satisfied for longer without reaching for something sweet. Take them to the office, on a picnic or consume before and after exercise. The body uses carbohydrates when exercising and therefore protein is essential for muscle repair. One ounce of cashew nuts provide 9 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of protein.
Nuts are high in fat and contain a lot of calories which is often a source of confusion because the benefits of eating them are truly valuable to your health. They contain vitamins, protein, fibre, minerals, potassium, magnesium, selenium and essential fats. These little snacks are healthier when eaten raw because once roasted they lose 15% of their good fats.
Walnuts are rich in Omega- 3 therefore great for your overall health. They are delicious when added to stir fries, cakes or salads… the options are endless.
Almonds are high in Vitamin E which are essential to improve the appearance of your skin.
These are a fantastic snack and are great to use when making granola…. the perfect nuts to start the day.
Cashews are full of iron and zinc therefore an excellent choice if you are following a vegetarian diet. Use them in stir fries and add them to your salad.
Pecans are rich in antioxidants and vitamin B3, they are a great nut to add to a sweet desert.
Macadamia are sweet, delicious and full of flavour. An 8.6 gram serving will provide you with 23% of your daily recommended intake of dietary fibre. I have used these nuts to make the sweet topping for my lemon sherbet squares.
So the next time you go shopping you may view these fantastic chunks of healthy goodness differently. Give them a try and make your own delicious treats.
